Phase XXXIV : Maryland + Pennsylvania 2

Washington D.C. is a must stop for anyone that has not been there, but it was not in the forecast for us.  We have been there multiple times; both as individuals and as a couple.  Before we started this trip, emphasis was put on adventures which neither of us have experienced or shared together.  During the first several months of dating, our trip to Washington D.C. was quite memorable.  While that adventure started off slowly (Mer was also sick then), it concluded with time at the Zoo and then The Capitol & Washington Monument during the Cherry Blossom Festival.  Any other take would go unmatched.

So, we opted for Frederick where we would evaluate our health and our next steps before wrapping up this short leg.  The next morning, we planned to partake in cocktails and crabs (really, just beers & crab, but cocktails & crabs sounds so much cooler).  What's not to like about this agenda?!?  Then we had to decide if we would head towards Delaware or make our way home that evening.  This leg was a grind, physically and mentally.  We were challenged with our health, but the precipitation and threat of the hurricane constantly loomed.  It was decided to enjoy Frederick and then begin the long trek to the manor.  Still, Mer and I are no longer amateurs out here, and we knew how to make the most of it.

One of Maryland's most well-known breweries (IMO) is Flying Dog.  Our visit to Frederick was no accident, ha!  Nowadays, the number of breweries are easily > the number of days we have in each state.  Sometimes we have tackled nano-breweries, but this time we have opted for a well-distributed brewery.  There were regulars and exclusives on tap, and both were enjoyed.  Afterwards, we headed towards old downtown Frederick for Brewers Alley.  Their take on old fashion ales are some of the best I have tried.  And there was also crab dip appetizer and crab sandwiches, in which we indulged.

Our time in Maryland was limited, but fortunately access to the east coast from Ohio is relatively a quick drive.  Just like presidents, there will be new journeys in Maryland in the near future, but not soon enough :)

After lunch, we headed north towards Gettysburg, PA.  I had never been, but Meredith had.  Part of Mer's symptoms include some level of energy in the morning, but by afternoon rest has been warranted.  So, while she rested, I spent time in the museum.  Visiting Gettysburg will surely generate mixed emotions.  On one hand, it represents one of the most epic battles in the effort to abolish slavery and give freedom to all.  On the other hand, many have lost their lives to provide such freedom.  The visit was not so much on the "to-do" list, as it was an opportunity to honor those who have given their lives.  And following the museum, we visited parts of the battlefield.  Death still lingers here, and it was humbling to consider the bravery and sacrifice so many had made.
